It's interesting that he shows his "Vader" qualities when he says"they should be made to agree." A moment I was waiting for.

Yeah, I think he's right. I wish he'd knock Hillary Clinton and Tom Daschle around for me. Boy, that'd be a real hoot!

I think this scene was supposed to show not only his Vader-ness shining through, but also that he's slowly being influenced by the future Emperor Palpatine. I wish we could have had more Darth Palpatine in the film. :D
Yep, it's tragic in that sense.
Palps has clearly infested his way of thinking, it's pretty dangerous because he is using Anakin's basic desire to "do good" to nudge the padawan in the direction of tyranny. :(

Just think about it. When Anakin fails as a Jedi, who is going to confide it, mentor-wise? Yep, you know.

jawaboy,
why would he knock hillary and daschel around? they are on the same side.:)
that was a rather unusual scene. here is padme, an advocate of democracy having a picnic with someone who advocates faschism.
i was kinda wondering, what is anakin learning in that jedi academy, or is palpatine having more of an influence on him than his teachers? nevertheless, padme should of took off running when anakin said these things. smart she ain't.:) how could she be attracted to someone who believes the opposite of what she does?

Maybe that is why she has that somewhat frown on after she grins at him at the end of the scene.

I think he was partially joking. He just kinda stared at her and then he started laughing. He might believe the dictatorship stuff later, but right there, I think he was trying to be "cute".
End :).

I think that he believes it.
Then she says ' you're teasing me'
and Anakin goes 'uh-oh' in his head and smiles like - sure, that's it, right, I was just...uh...joking, that's it.
then thinks 'my charming smile will win her over. It will make her overlook the fact that I'm an arrogant, whiny, mass murderer, fascist.

i agree with you croaker. he has to believe this. one just doesn't become vader or a hitler-esq type overnight by losing their mother or something else tragic. those seeds of faschism or dictatorship need time to take root, and palpatine seems to be watering the garden of anakin's mind on a regular basis.:)

derek, Hillary and Tom don't agree with me! :D Why, I could never have good ol' Trent Lott beaten around, his hair is too nice!
I wonder how much influence Palpy already has. Palpy praises Anakin for patience in getting his first assignment and Anakin says something about it having more to do with his guidance.
Sounds like Anakin is already under Palpy's spell. That's where he got all those GREAT ideas on how to ruffle up Senators. :p

Yeah, its kind of funny that a defender of the Republic would support the idea of authoritarian rule. Padme should have known better.:D
He was only foolin'. He did express his belief in the ideal of democracy, his only serious belief after that was that "they should be made" to agree.
The whole teasing bit was just his cocky self trying to get some love. :D
Still though, it shows the seeds of his future support of a dictatorship . . . but I wouldn't call him fascist at this point . . .

I think it showed his simplistic way of looking at things. Use power to solve problems. That's his theme through the whole movie. It will help if we believe Anakin started out with good intentions and then lost sight of them under Palpatine's influence. It's hard enough to swallow his redemption after slaughtering Jedis, Rebels, Sandpeople, and even Imperial Officers (is anyone really safe from this guy) if he didn't start off trying to do right by everybody.
