View Full Version : A possible solution to the Post padding dilemma

(if there was one)
Trouble with Aussies coming in, making a quick comment (or even just an emoticon), ducking back out and getting credit for "posting"?
How about a system where the post isn't counted until you reach a certain amount of characters in the post. For instance 50 or 75 ( of your OWN, quoting doesn't count) characters. if you fall short of the minimum amount, your post still shows for all to read, but you just don't credit for a "post". This might be too difficult to implement in the programming code, but it would crack down on those who post three or four words like "I like that, too." and get full credit for posting.
Feedback?

I dunno....that would seem to be more of an annoyance than anything...

I think that 50 words is a bit high. Everything else may have been said, but you might have a little information that someone forgot to add... or a little known fact. That would be unfair to many of us who have something to say, but refuse to get so wordy about it!
(seriously... this was only 53 words... and I could have said it in fewer words!!)

I've mentioned the trick to getting around the minimum characters idea before, but I'll repeat it here.
Normal padded post:
"Oh really?"
Minimum character padded post:
"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll llllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy????????????????????????????? ?????"
or:
ohreallyohreallyohreallyohreallyohreallyohreallyoh really(and so on, you get the idea)
I think if post padding is going to cause such heartburn to the infrequent posters, then there should be another way devised to gain rank. OR no ranks at all, which is what I'd prefer.

I said CHARACTERS, not words. By characters I mean letters, punctuation and emoticons...50 is not very high at all...

Maybe we could just use the honor system.
Choose the appropriate response:
a) infinite laughter
b) sound of crickets
c) hazing tactics (i.e. Wet Willies, Wedgies, pummeling, etc.)
d) ignore
In my day, kids never padded their posts. They were uphill, snowy, shoeless, die-cast-metal-not-this-cheap-plastic in my day, and we liked it that way! Now where's my Sio Bibble icon...

I pick "b"
(would this be considered a padded post?)
Well, in that case in order to fulfill the minimun character count I'd like to sing you all a little song....
*ahem* (clears throat)
"From a distance, you look like a *****. How much do you cost?"
(hey no fair! Oh well)
:D

I think the only person who truely hates this idea is GNT 'cause otherwise he'd only have about 10 posts.

One way to deter members from padding is to rate their thread.

I think we should just reward this type of repeated behavior with a stern warning and then if they continue, a 72-hour suspension. If they continue from there, the suspensions get longer exponentially.
Honestly, I'm sick of seeing and having to delete padded posts, it's not difficult for the mods, but it's taking up time I could be devoting to responding to someone else's comments or reading another thread.

We need Wet Willies and Wedgies Avactars :) Something I need to add to my list of "To Do's"
