This (http://www.hbo.com/trueblood/) new show looks awesome. I can't wait for it to start, checked out this (http://www.hbo.com/trueblood/otherworlds/) video earlier today, they seem to be going all out for it. Anyone else looking forward to it?

I'm definitely gonna check it out!

It's too early to make a decision on the show itself, but the preview comics they were handing out at Comic-Con were insanely bad. They killed so many brain cells, I passed out and had to be rushed to the hospital.

A show about vampires from the genius that is Alan Ball? Easy decision for me. :D

Okay, I didn't recognize the name, and did a little bit of Wiki research. I'll definitely check out this show based on his resume.

They're really marketing this the wrong way, though. Based on the downright goofy hype at Comic-Con and the insanely bad freebie comic (seriously, I saw Rob Liefeld saying, "This comic suck!"), I was prepared to completely ignore it.

Good thing I know people who recognize screenwriters' names better than I do.

I'd like to wear one of those True Blood t-shirts offered by HBO to my work!

The only problem is that the brass has no sense of humor.....

My mom is a fan of the series of novels and is rethinking her policy of not paying for cable over this one.

Hmmmm. Very interesting, y'all. I kept getting interrupted trying to view it, so I'll have to fire up HBO on Demand to see it all since I didn't get the chance to see it uninterrupted.

Waiting for others to chime in. I'm surprised there's not preliminary a review yet.

Hello....DQ....UKW....KH....JT...????

Alrightie then.

Thanks to HBO on Demand, I was able to see the first episode in its entirety. I can see that it's going to take me some time to get into True Blood. Not sure why it didn't grab me (too many Southern cliches, perhaps?) but I'm not hooked like I was with John from Cincinnati from its get-go.

I know it's only the first episode, but I thought too many characters were introduced all at once for my liking. I would have liked to see more emphasis on just the main characters to start. Leave the others on the sidelines for now.

Time will tell.....

I just got around to watching True Blood last night, and I rather enjoyed it. They did throw a lot of characters at us, but by the end of the episode I had them all down. I absolutely love the premise of the show and I am eagerly awaiting the next episode, and to see exactly where they go with it. The writing is a bit different, but I am enjoying the acting and cast (Paquin especially), even though it isn't the greatest and I'm not familiar with most of them. So yeah, I enjoyed the first episode and I think the show will continue to get better/stronger and grow on the audience.

I got around tp it last night also. I thought it was ok, worth a second viewing to see where it goes. It has alot of potential to get better, hopefully it does

Just watched the first ep. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't especially good. I definitely don't see this as a worthy replacement for the Deadwood/Sopranos time slot based on the first episode.

Deadwood really grabbed me from the first scene, and Sopranos had a weak first episode, but it was just enough to make me have to see the second, which hooked me. True Blood was just sorta there. It was kinda like watching the first episode of Lost or Heroes here. I didn't feel like I wanted my hour back, but I didn't feel compelled to watch more. (I'm not asking to debate those two shows, since you already know that's how I felt about them.)

Mrs Chux really liked it, though, so I have this feeling I'll be seeing at least another episode or two. If it gets better within a few episodes, I'll keep watching after that. (Otherwise, it's Family Guy for me!)

Oddly, there was absolutely no connection to the preview comic, which was about a vampire who was a former Caribbean slave flying to Japan to discuss the True Blood drink with its developers. I wonder if that'll tie in eventually, or if it was a total red herring. (Like I said, that comic blew chunks, so it wouldn't hurt the show one bit if it never came up again.)

I saw a couple of "behind the scenes/making of"-type programs on True Blood last night on HBO.

It featured film makers and academics outlining the evolution of the Dracula/vampire genre of literature and movies. Interesting stuff. At this point more interesting than the series for me, but has given me hope that the series will improve and not poop out.*

OK. Second episode fleshed out Bill and Sookie a bit more to my liking (i.e. powers they possess). We've got a murder mystery thing brewing. I'm liking it much more now. Nice mini-cliffhanger ending, too.

BLASPHAMY!!!

Battlestar Galactica
The Dresden Files
Eureka
SG-1
Stargate Atlantis

As for my view on "True Blood", I have decided that it is really nothing short of soft porn at this point. I get the fact that it's about Vampires and that inherently means eroticism, but it seems like someone's going at it every 5-10 minutes now. It has gotten to the point where the story is sacrificed for the $ex.

I will probably continue to record it on the DVR, just to see if the story gets any better.;);)

You forgot to mention Farscape as good SFC. The Chronicle, First Wave, Secret Adventures of Jules Verne, and The Invisible Man were decent too.

I'm still very much into this show.

I love Sookie and Bill, those characters (along with their relationship) are great.

Sam is interesting, and I think there is some sort of connection between him and that dog.

pbarnard
10-02-2008, 01:15 PM
Actually I think the dog is Bill. Remember from Dracula, he is able to transform into a wolf/dog as well so. This is the series where Vampires are the metaphor for whatever minority group, the werewolf will become the metaphor for the fringe majority group that commits hate crimes against the minority group.

And what is with casting Ana Paquin as outcast southern girl who's had no relationship/contact with others. I've seen this before, was it called X-Men???

That's not a bad idea, its just that when Tara slept with Sam he was making those dog noises/barking while he was sleeping. :Ponder:

Plus at the end of the last episode, he rolled all over the bed where Jason's current f-buddy was killed. It's just one of those things meant to throw us off. But the dog was shown in both the first and second episodes with Sam at one point.

Another excellent episode.

That hamburger has aids. Ohh man. Awesome scene. Lafayette straight up worked those guys over. Great character, one of my faves on the show.

I liked how we got to learn quite a bit more about Bill and how he became a vampire. Good stuff.

Sam showed a different side. After he and Sookie got in that argument, you could hear a dog barking in the background. Hmmmm....

I hated the ending though. I liked Gran, didn't want to see her go. :(

Hey guys! You know, I've gotta say that even though the first episode didn't really thrill me as much as I'd hoped I decided I was going to stick with it anyway. It just seemed like one of those cool guilty pleasure type shows. I'm glad to say that it actually has gotten better with each consecutive episode. They do sort of overdo it a bit with the sex, and I'm not overly fond of how familiar I've been getting with Jason's rear, though, and I don't really care for the seemingly overwrought accent on Tara (I say seemingly because it sounds very fake to me even though for all I know it may actually be the actress' real accent) but I do see lots of great potential for this show and I'm hopeful for good things to come.
It probably helps that I actually know Sam's secret (and a couple of Sookie and Jason's for that matter!) and am really looking forward to where that's going!

Agreed. It will be interesting to see the interaction between Bill and Elvira (pardon the pun). Was he "kept" by her for a while? Was he used and abused? Did he have to plan a getaway from her? If done right, this could be a really good part of the story and a good insight into vampire "culture". I hope they pursue this in tonight's episode.

Not a werewolf to be exact, but I like what you guys are thinking! For the record - I already know the answer to that one and I ain't tellin'!

I have to say after this last episode that I will now be eternally grateful to the producers of this show for giving me one thing I'd been hoping to see for quite a while now! I shan't explain further, but those of you who are appreciative of it as I am will already know of which I refer. I find it terribly interesting that It's finally been delivered in a television show as opposed to a theatrical film where one might be more inclined to expect that sort of thing. Anyway, I'm glad it's been done and that I was able to share in that moment!

Since it's out in the open now (in more ways than one), does it seem like Anna Paquin is going in sorta a reverse of the Hollywood stereotype?

She started out in an Oscar-winning role. Then she moved to superhero movies. Then to TV. And now she's topless.

Will she be conducting studio tours by the time she's forty?

Honestly, I think she'll be another Jodi Foster. Hit it big, lay low, come back for a few big pictures here and there. That's about it.
