Nine Lives was the best studio album they recorded since Toys in the Attic. I've never been able to get into Just Push Play, and it's still my least fave album by them by far.
JPP has a few good tunes but the album is sketchy and weak overall...Nine Lives is very solid, problem being that they released the two weakest songs as the first two singles.

You guys are crazy, both those albums are WAY overproduced and reek of corporate pop-as-rock. If they hadn't released Honkin' on Bobo, it'd be SO easy to say the band is over (not that Bobo is a great album, it just has a more raw, exuberant Aerosmith sound) - looking at their NASCAR/Britney/Super Bowl Halftime show during the JPP era it's easy to see a band sold all the way out.

Sure, I took a little nap somewhere during the Megaman sequence in AOTC, but I made it through all three. Sir, I bid you good day! :mad:Nine Lives reeks of that pop trend, I'd say it's the worst of it except JPP is jockeying for the same position. You can bid me good day all you like, but the truth is that those 2 are the pinnacle of Aerosmith's sell-out phase.
Bobo is a good album, entertaining, but I don't think it can be classified as "great" because it's all covers except for 1 tune. It's Aerosmith having fun and getting back to their roots, but it's not them writing nasty, smutty, awesome songs like they could have.

Whereas I would argue that, by reinterpreting these classic songs (and there's not a carbon copy cover on the album), they introduced them to a new bunch of listeners who otherwise would never have known them. Hey, I support that! The Academy needs to vote for Optimus Prime!
I'm sure everyone here will make fun of me, but I liked the prequels as well.
You guys loved the OT because it first came to you when:
1) It focused on the brutal dark times under the Empire
2) You were a child of 5-10 years of age.
The PT came to you when:
1) The galaxy was not yet at war (until the last half hour of AOTC)
2) You are an adult between 20-and 40 years
3) A complicated political conspiracy story had to establish the creation of the Empire
4) Lucas tried to rope a a new kiddie generation with a kid and cartoon character
They are indeed different kinds of movies.
Harrison Ford is an "A+" list actor that Natalie Portman or even Samuel L. Jackson don't approach in caliber. Hayden wasn't more or less established than Mark Hamill, but Hamill is maybe a bit better actor with better writing for him (both Skywalkers whined though). Lucas decided to make Qui-Gon a Vulcan, thereby tying Liam Neeson's hands. Ewan McGreggor did very well, but wasn't written for as good as he could have been. Ian McDiarmid was brilliant, but of course he is an OT actor as well as a PT actor. ROTS was his best film though.
Meanwhile, Transformers was awesome and should not be made fun of! Michael Bay is on his ascension to becoming a film lore god and Spielberg (who IS already a film lore god) is helping him.
Transformers will be the new Star Wars. Until all are one! Roll out!

These two statements imply that the only reason and way anyone really loves Star Wars movies is because they are a kid or because they can "let go" of being an adult while watching them.
Bu**sh**.
The reason the OT is universally enjoyed is because it was a well written and executed story. Lucas conceived it. Huyck, Katz, and Kasdan wrote it. Lucas (sort of) directed ANH, Kerschner ESB, and Marquand ROTJ.
The reason the Prequels were universally panned has nothing to do with age. It has to do with the quality of the storytelling and to a lesser extent, the execution. Lucas did away with quality writers and chose to do it all himself this time. Reports from actors themselves on set indicate that George was more interested in the process (upwards of 120 setups a day!!!!) than in actually working to create a quality product. It doesn't matter how old someone is when they watch it...age has nothing to do with the intrinsic quality of something.
They are indeed different kinds of movies.
That's an understatement.
Harrison Ford is an "A+" list actor that Natalie Portman or even Samuel L. Jackson don't approach in caliber.
While this is an entirely subjective opinion, I disagree. Arguably, Natalie is a far superior actor than Ford ever has been. You wouldn't know it from the poor material in the Prequels, but her other work showcases her talent.
Sam Jackson is a lousy actor no matter what he's in.
Hayden wasn't more or less established than Mark Hamill, but maybe a bit better actor with better writing for him (both Skywalkers whined though).
Please. Enough with the "luke was a whiner" bs that tries to undermine Hamill's acting. He was SUPPOSED to be a whiner. That's like insulting Deniro for being an a**hole in The Untouchables. He's supposed to be like that. Trying to equate Luke's "whining" character to Anakin's all-over-the-map inconsistent mood swings is a red-herring argument. Hayd-akin blows as an actor and he shows it entirely in the Prequels. Hamill isn't Peter O'Toole, but he does his part as it was meant to be.
Lucas decided to make Qui-Gon a Vulcan, thereby tying Liam Neeson's hands.
Right. And it sucked. Not only a bad choice for any character ever (except a Vulcan), but it was for a useless character anyway. Two strikes against that one.
Ewan McGreggor did very well, but wasn't written for as good as he could have been.
Agreed, especially given the crappy material and non-existent direction George gave him. Ewan even stormed off set one day (green screen Kamino sequence) after George refused to give him ANY sense of what the environment or aliens would look like. Word is, it took two days to find him and convince him to come back to work.
Ian McDiarmid was brilliant, but of course he is an OT actor as well as a PT actor. ROTS was his best film though.
I wouldn't say brilliant, but decent. Not sure what the fu** happened with his over theatrical bs after he turns into the Emperor. Suddenly he thought he had to play Broadway and win a Tony.
Meanwhile, Transformers was awesome and should not be made fun of! Michael Bay is on his ascension to becoming a film lore god and Spielberg (who IS already a film lore god) is helping him.

Harrison Ford is an "A+" list actor that Natalie Portman or even Samuel L. Jackson don't approach in caliber.
What ? NatPo is highest of the 3 and while Sam Jackson has made some real duds, I think he's on par with Ford overall. Not a knock against Ford because I think he's awesome, just sayin I think Sam has done some awesome films. :)
Hayden wasn't more or less established than Mark Hamill, but Hamill is maybe a bit better actor with better writing for him (both Skywalkers whined though).
Hayden has made two solid non-SW films with great acting that I've seen (I haven't seen Factory Girl yet?)...what has Hammill done ? Jay and Silent Bob and cartoon voiceover work? I'm surprised he didn't voice some of the PT characters. lol
Meanwhile, Transformers was awesome and should not be made fun of!

These two statements imply that the only reason and way anyone really loves Star Wars movies is because they are a kid or because they can "let go" of being an adult while watching them.
Being a kid helps. Do I detect you want to change your screenname? :D
It has to do with the quality of the storytelling and to a lesser extent, the execution.
If you mean by gaps in logic, such as how Padme falls in love with Anakin whom she's been resisting while he even goes homicidal? Or how Palpatine suddenly can't teach Anakin how to cheat death after he turns to the Dark Side, pledging his allegiance for that very reason, then yes, there are problems with the quality of storytelling that are not so profound in the OT. (Mind you, I don't think Qui-Gon was one of them, and I'm indifferent to midichlorians - though I see how they were referenced in Palpatine's monologue to Anakin in the opera scene.)
While this is an entirely subjective opinion, I disagree. Arguably, Natalie is a far superior actor than Ford ever has been. You wouldn't know it from the poor material in the Prequels, but her other work showcases her talent.
I've never been really inspired to go out and watch Natalie's other films. It's possibly because I so strongly dislike patronizing women (though I want to go see Jessica Alba's comedy so I can leer at her in her panties)
But generally, I think it's "girly" to be a fan of women performers unless they're in porn.
Trying to equate Luke's "whining" character to Anakin's all-over-the-map inconsistent mood swings is a red-herring argument.
Maybe Anakin was supposed to be like that - bi-Polar. It helps him have his second identity: Darth Vader.
Right. And it sucked. Not only a bad choice for any character ever (except a Vulcan), but it was for a useless character anyway. Two strikes against that one.
Qui-Gon could have been presented any number of ways:
a Vulcan (Jedi being emotionally controlled, in other words)
an Emo (portrayed by Patrick Stewart?)
a comedian (played by Kevin Smith?)
a raving tyrant (played by Jack Nicholson or Robert DeNiro)
Lucas does tend to use archetypes and he was establishing the Jedi Order with the characterization anyway. I think I prefer the Vulcan over all these other choices.
Now as to whether Qui-Gon was necessary?
1) Anakin might have been created by the Sith, by Darth Plageuis - but he wasn't being trained by him (Lucas could have also done that with the story, but the Jedi might've really sensed that).
2) Had Anakin been trained by an experienced Jedi Master like Qui-Gon, he might have been better balanced. Obi-Wan wasn't even a Jedi when he decided he was ready to teach like any other Master because it was Qui-Gon's dying wish (partially because he felt responsible for Anakin because he promised he'd be to Shmi).
3) Anakin was old for Jedi training, familiar with emotions, and his personality was established. He resented authority because he'd been a slave. He was competative because of his sport. He was quick to anger because he was picked on. He could become attached to female-figures because he was nurtured by his natural mother.
If on the other hand, Anakin was introduced as this perfect Jedi, the story would land the failure on Obi-Wan's shoulders, and he is perhaps deserving of only 25% of the blame.
Agreed, especially given the crappy material and non-existent direction George gave him. Ewan even stormed off set one day (green screen Kamino sequence) after George refused to give him ANY sense of what the environment or aliens would look like. Word is, it took two days to find him and convince him to come back to work.
That was dumb of George. Did he make a bad decision for bad reasons? Or did Jay Johnstone and Doug Chiang et. all create Kamino entirely themselves and George not even know what they were doing back at ILM?

Being a kid helps. Do I detect you want to change your screenname? :D
No, you missed the point. My own 12 year old knows how dumb the Prequels are compared to the OT. It isn't about age, it's about quality. If someone chooses to ignore poor storytelling, that's their perojative, but it doesn't change the fact that something is wrong.
If you mean by gaps in logic, such as how Padme falls in love with Anakin whom she's been resisting while he even goes homicidal? Or how Palpatine suddenly can't teach Anakin how to cheat death after he turns to the Dark Side, pledging his allegiance for that very reason,
Yes, and then some.
then yes, there are problems with the quality of storytelling that are not so profound in the OT.
List 'em. You aren't allowed to just drop an accusation like that as if it were an undisputed fact. Who do you think you are, Fox News?
(Mind you, I don't think Qui-Gon was one of them, and I'm indifferent to midichlorians - though I see how they were referenced in Palpatine's monologue to Anakin in the opera scene.)
Your opinions and everyone else's have nothing to do with empirically bad storytelling.
Well, that's your own problem. Natalie is AMAZING is The Professional as well as a number of other films. I also had the pleasure of watching her in NY in The Diary of Anne Frank. She is Audrey Hepburn reincarnated.
I've also loved Bonny Hunt in just about everything she's done. Elizabeth Perkins is also a favorite of mine. Those women are more than window dressing. They are genuine actors who portray realistic characters. That's worthy of respect even if they don't drop their panties as soon as the camera rolls.
Maybe Anakin was supposed to be like that - bi-Polar. It helps him have his second identity: Darth Vader.
Well, bi-polar is how I characterized/diagnosed him. I doubt that Lucas and/or the original conception really intended for Anakin's turn to be dependent upon a psychological disorder.
Qui Gon was pointless, so any choice is nonsense.
If on the other hand, Anakin was introduced as this perfect Jedi, the story would land the failure on Obi-Wan's shoulders, and he is perhaps deserving of only 25% of the blame.
I didn't even bother reading most of what you wrote because the original question of whether the character is necessary is easily and definitively answered by the established continuity of the OT. Obi Wan's master was Yoda. Period. Any further discussion of Qui Gon is pointless.
That was dumb of George. Did he make a bad decision for bad reasons? Or did Jay Johnstone and Doug Chiang et. all create Kamino entirely themselves and George not even know what they were doing back at ILM?
Dumb? Yes. As to your other questions...moot. George is the Director/Producer and as such has the responsibility of knowing everything that is going on as well as guiding all aspects of production. If an Actor has a question, it's his job to answer it, not to tell the Actor to sit down and say the lines. That attitude explains the bulk of the problems with the Prequels.
That was funny, actually. Maybe inappropriate for SW, but funny nevertheless. I love Ian! No! No! No!
In the same vein, I LOVED the Grievous character in ROTS. Do I think he really belongs in Star Wars? Not really, no, mainly because I can't picture that character existing in the OT universe (had he lived). I still think he's a fun character in a lot of ways, but quite inappropriate for Star Wars nonetheless.

Well, I know by your post that you really haven't seen her movies because she wasn't in The Specialist. It was The Professional. Her resume can be found at www.imdb.com .
The Prequels make EVERYBODY look bad, even the previously muppet actors, like Yoda. The dialogue is often terrible and unmotivated. Plus, it is common knowledge that Lucas doesn't actually direct the Actors. They are given lines, dressed, and led to greenscreen sets and told to speak when the camera is turned on. Period.

Hells yeah Rocketboy, I haven't watched Closer or Garden State in a long long time...gotta bump them up on my To Do list.Speaking of Natalie Portman and a To Do list...ummm...nevermind.
Have you seen Hotel Chevalier, Cae?
I've not. How can I view this, is it on DVD ? I'm guessing not...if it was a Short.

Yeah, it is a short prequel of sorts to The Darjeeling Limited.
Its on itunes (or other places if you search), but I could get in trouble for posting a link to it (for reasons in your PM box).

I don't know what films you guys are watching, but I'm on the bandwagon that Portman IS NOT A GOOD actress....Agreed! I've always thought that as good as she was in The Professional, there hasn't been another role where she's played anything but her standard meek, flat Nat character. I liked V for Vendetta, but she was the weakest part of the film.

I do give her credit for the Professional...but she wasn't the reason that film was awsome.....

True enough, but if a cuter kid actor had been in the part, it would have crumbled. She was the right note there, no question.

Portman was a great child actress in The Professional; but as an adult actress she's been pretty flat and boring.

I hear Lucas thought about doing CGI for her boobs in ROTS....they were going to be a new characters named Jug Jug Binks and hilarity would insue....unfortunately he ran out of time and it took away from her character's development, although it was going to account for her mysterious death....

The reasons the prequels suck is that George Lucas sucks.
1) He once said in an interview that his favorite scene was the one of Jabba in his box at the podrace. What?????
Why, because it combined several different special effects filmed at several different times, and he was able to combine them so that nobody would notice. What??
Shouldn't the director's fav scene be the one that, gee I don't know, TELLS THE STORY???
2) Kenny Baker was never in Episode 3, he helped to create one of the most memorable characters in movie history, yet he was denied his rightful role in Episode 3, so he was only in 5 of the 6.
Why you ask? Because rather then film the scenes where he could be inside the droid, Lucas thought it would be better to recreate it digitally. What???
Better?? For who??
There are many more reasons, but I really don't want to get started, my hands would probably develop carpel-tunnel.

Yeah you know that ONE scene where the entire story is told... which one is that again?

Nor was Lance Bass and the other N'Syncer's.

It's fun to bash on crappy movies; but it's even more fun to get people who have somehow convinced themselves that they like said crappy movie all riled about by bashing the aforementioned crappy movie.:D
So, thank you! That was just the kind of reaction I was hoping for. The fact that you take an attack on a movie that you had absolutely no part in developing and somehow turn that into a personal attack, shows a great lack of maturity.
BTW, the Prequels are still a poor example of moviemaking.:p

Thank you LM for getting the thread back on Topic. No more flaming please by anyone. Posts will be deleted if it continues and they will be retro active. Let's do our best to keep this nice. A little jibe here and there at the prequels is okay but NOT personal attacks.

I like the prequels. Revenge of the Sith is possibly my favorite Star Wars movie. I've seen the OT way too many times because I am a nerd and had no life, and therefore had nothing better to do but watch them way too many times. This is why I get all excited about new Expanded Universe material to read - because I'm bored with the films.
But the prequels are newer, but maybe now they are older too because I don't really feel like watching TPM or AOTC. ROTS could be just new - and that's why I like it - but I haven't watched that in a long time either.
I love the Transformers movie! Michael Bay is a genius :crazed: But seriously, ever since 1984 or so, I wished for the robots I saw in the cartoon show to be made for real so they could kick major butt in a hardcore movie. Last summer, that sort of happened. It was not exactly what I wanted, but enough of my wish was fulfilled that I love it just because I have it.
Even my life as a complete nerd is not really impacted by how cool or not Star Wars or Transformers is or isn't in new cinematic outings. Thus I don't take it so seriously if Yoda wasn't Obi-Wan's full-time Jedi Master and Megatron doesn't turn into a handgun. Somehow I just say, "Let me try to enjoy it for what it is, and then move on." Well, I ended up enjoying it enough that I didn't want to move on, and here I am buying the ARC 170 fighter and the figures that go in it, as well as Ironhide as a black pickup truck instead of a red min-van.
Life goes on and I'm still a nerd even if I'm a flexible one.

How old are they again? It might have been a spelling change on Lucas' part from the original suggestion: Count PooPoo.
I would have to admit that it would be harder to take the movie seriously if his dame was Count PooPoo.

Fair enough, but then who the f*** else would be juvenile enough to come up with the name Jar Jar ?
