I wonder if Palpatine was far older and somehow using the Force to make himself appear younger. Palpatine might be even as old as 200 or something.

When he struck Luke with Dark Side lightning in ROTJ, Luke did not become all old and decrepid. He got in nearly as close as he was to his own reflected powers that Mace redirected back at him with Mace's lightsaber.

Perhaps Palpatine used that as an excuse to reveal himself to Anakin and gain his sympathy? Perhaps Palpatine also couldn't maintain his control over his disguise while under such duress?

Maybe an EU novel will shed light on this. James Luceno is busy at work on The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis.

By the way, can't knock Anakin for having a crush on the teenage Queen (that's not creepy), I thought it was more creepy for her to be crushing on him....especially after he grew up into a bratty Jedi-wanna-be-knight....
