Foursome to Play Star Wars Fanboys
Source: The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/)
February 1, 2006
Kristen Bell, Jay Baruchel, Chris Marquette and Sam Huntington are in final talks to play "Star Wars (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#)" geeks in Fanboys, a comedic drama (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) that Kevin Spacey's (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) Trigger Street is producing for The Weinstein Company. The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) says Kyle Newman is making his directorial debut on the feature.
The movie, written by Adam F. Goldberg and Ernest Cline, follows four "Star Wars" fanboys from the Midwest who drive across the country to honor the wish of their dying friend: to see the yet-unreleased Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=12994#) in its most optimal setting, George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch.
Dan Fogler already has been cast as one of the geeks, a hot-headed pizza boy. Shooting is scheduled to begin February 22 in New Mexico.Let the stereotypes begin!

I saw a fanmade film at Celebration 3 that had a similar premise where the nerdy guy had a choice. Go out with a really HOT girl that wants him or go to the opening night of EPS 1. It had some CGI effects with Pit droids and whatnot. In the end his ticket gets fried by the powerline, so he goes to see the girl. I may be a SW fan but I am more of a fan of getting with the ladies.
I think I saw a banner advertisement for it on a fanfilm website once too but never saw the movie till C3.

I can see it already: The "cool" nerd who has the ability to get some, the "hopeless" nerd who ends up gettin' some out of pity or something, the "uber-fanboy" nerd who speaks only in SW quotes, and the "scaredy cat" nerd who swears he's always finding blood in his stool.
Yeah, this sounds like a cool idea.

And don't forget the super hot nerd chick that the others manage not to notice how hot she is (AKA the She's All That syndrome).

Awwww man, Tony Danza? Sure, I'm no Richard Dean Anderson or Emilio Esteves, but...Well, I guess it could be worse. Lassie doesn't suit you Chux, isn't Scott Baio or Jason Mewes available?
P.S. Yeah the film is called "Fanboys" but you forgot to cast D'ox. You need the token female.
So what is the general public's idea of 'the star wars geek'? And does anyone here think they are a match for it in some - or all - ways?

I match it in that I'm a SW fan, but I'm not overweight, zitty, or living in my mom's basement.
I think SW fans get a bad wrap. Peolpe always tell you to "Live long and prosper" and you hafta smile and nod politely.

And Ron Lester as Scruffziller.:D
I'm a Star Wars fan but you wouldn't know it till you went into my bedroom - just one room of the house. I do still live with my parents (though many 23 year olds who aren't star wars geeks also live at home). I don't talk about Star Wars in the pub or at work - except on those rare occasions when I bump into my old friend from school who used to share my enthusiasm. I don't think about Star Wars all day/every day. I only use Star wars quotes on my brothers or someone who I know will get it. I'm actually a decent looking lad although I am prone to spots (again - so are a lot of people), I'm a bit on the thin side and I'm shortsighted so I wear glasses. I don't have a girlfriend down to a lack of effort on my part - put it this way I wouldn't use 'what did you think of Revenge of the Sith' as a chat-up line. Those that know me have known me long enough to find out that I'm a Star Wars fan but they don't stereotype me as such.

The guy that plays Jimmy Olsen in Superman Returns is in "Fanboys" and it appears that George Lucas will actually participate in the movie.
It may not suck as much as previously assumed...but it probably will.
It comes out, I think, beginning of next year -- and it's about 'Star Wars' fans. It's about these four friends who drive from Ohio to San Francisco in 1998 to steal a copy of 'Episode I The Phantom Menace (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14933#)' from the Skywalker Ranch and it's really, really funny and it's a very very emotionally powerful, believe it or not, because they're fulfilling the wish of their dying friend. And I know that sounds very cliched, but it's actually very tastefully done."
He says he plays "a car salesman who is kind of like hounding the trip. I play a guy who basically has been segregated from his fanboy friends. They've all continued on after college to remain fanboys and I've kind of gone the corporate road and work for my day at a car dealership and inherit it at the beginning of the movie (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14933#) and then it just kind of goes on after that. That's right. I rediscover my inner fanboy."
Asked how the fanboys in the film will react to Jar Jar Binks, Huntington said, "Jar Jar appears in the movie in a very very funny way that I can't reveal to you, because it's absolutely hysterical. It's one of my favorite moments in the whole movie."
He added that George Lucas does make an appearance. "Needless to say, we kiss his *** for an hour-and-a-half, he kind of had to sign off on it, you know. The extend of his... I should keep that kind of a mystery, the extent of his involvement. It's very cool. It's going to be a fun, fun movie."http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14933
That guy also played Jam in Detroit Rock City, another road movie about a group of diehards who travel to see whatever it is they are diehard about.

I read something in new TV Guide about an actress(was it Kristen Bell...I don't remember) mentioning she was in this film about 4 youths trying to break into Skywalker Ranch. Is this for real? Is it an Indie, major theatrical release or direct to DVD. Anyone heard anything 'bout it?

This may be the same link JMG posted, but I had to make sure everyone sees this trailer. This movie is about US! Totally - like the road trip to a Star Wars Celebration or something. Haha.
This just made my must-see list along with Spider-Man 3, and Transformers, maybe James Bond 21.

I totally forgot about this movie. I was so looking forward to seeing this, but it had been delayed forever. I started Googling for some trailers and release dates and I found out that it will be coming out this spring. However, it was recut and reshot by a different director and apparently has been made into a fart joke movie about pathetic Star Wars nerds. :hurt:
This thing looked so promising and I'm disappointed of the changes that were made.
There is a site that has more info on it

Anyone know more about the changes?

That's tragic, I was really looking forward to this one after seeing clips at SDCC (I missed the panel at CIV), but these changes look to really ruin the film. Weinstein has really aimed for failure since leaving Miramax.

I've already written this movie off. It looked good, and I really wanted to see it. But after waiting this long and aftering hearing about alll the editing and revisions going into it -I can go without it.

I'm not going to come down firmly on either side of this debate yet...I'll wait to see both versions of the film and see what my opinions are.
However, the second link (of the two I posted) of the guys who are dumping on Steven Brill make them look bad, in my opinion. I don't see anything in there proving that it's the "real" Steve Brill, it's an AOL account that could be anybody posing as Brill. Has this identity ever been confirmed?
Either way, it sounds like sour grapes from this Jek Porkins guy and his e-companions. I don't think they look good in this fight at all and they are definitely living up to the stereotype of the loser dorks that they claim the new cut of the film is making fun of.
I wasn't sold on the "cancer" storyline in the first place, so I don't have a passion for this project from the beginning. :bandit:
Also, WTF is up with the Phantom Menace connection? Don't most people hate that movie anyway? I think the timing for this movie is just awful.

I read more up on it, that was confirmed to be Brill's real email addy based on unrelated material he had sent someone for another movie.

Yeah. This sucks. I really liked the trailer and premise for Fanboys when I saw it. I think it was on the Clerks 2 DVD quite a while ago. Shame that they're destroying what could have been a pretty funny and heart warming cult classic movie just like the original Clerks by ruining it with all this recut garbage.

I heard about this the other day, and thought "oh, that's nice". The reality is that they missed their window of opportunity on this one by screwing around with it, the director wanted it out ASAP but Weinstein first ployed him into a delay with the promise of extra budget reshoots, and then took the film away entirely. Now it's a film that will make no splash at all unfortunately. I'll still go though.

I don't understand: it was almost a fan-film that a big Hollywood guy tried to take over, alter too much, and it wound up in a legal battle and delayed?
Is that basically it? And now the big Hollywood guy gave up, ultimately after the timing became very bad?

Aaaand, Weinsteins strike back! http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/10/star-wars-tribu.html
This time, apparently it's all of the films at TWC. My guess is the writers' strike left them with a big hole in their '09 schedule and they sacrificed the last quarter of '08 to fill it. It's gonna be weird if this movie gets put out for the 10th anniversary of TPM.
