View Full Version : Howzabout a pay section?
Slicker

I'm on a couple of other forums (non-SW) and one of them has a pay section where you just give what you can and they hook you up with some products associated with the site (i.e. stickers and the like) and a special paying members area. It then hit me that that would be a good idea for this site. You could have a set limit like a one time fee of $20 and we could get a shirt (I'd rock it!) and maybe some stickers or something and also our own little area kinda like the Cell Block but uncensored.
I know it can get expensive to run a site and I see you have lots of advertising but what the heck, can a couple of extra dollars really hurt anything?

Steve looked into changing into a pay site a couple of years ago, due to costs for running the site and so on. He ended up getting enough sponsors that he didn't have to charge members anything.
I would rather see some SSG merchandise for sale, i.e. shirts, bumber stickers, etc. just a regular SSG store.

I wasn't talking an entire pay site just a little area for paying people to go and have some uncensored fun. Where could go and say stuff like why don't you go **** yourself and not have a whole buncha "*" instead of what we want to say.:crazed:

Yeah! Over Celebration3, Steve and I talked about doing merchandise for a Sirsteve "store", shirts, hats/bcaps, etc! I'm trying to hook him up with a deal through my importers to keep costs low; and I'll admit I hadn't thought of stickers, but I know I can have those done as well! I have sources for both plain ole stickers and 3-Year vynil decals! We also talked about possible mouse pads, and coffee mugs!
Maybe Steve can put up a poll for this, but what kind of merchandise would you guys like to see made or want, and approximately how much would you be willing to spend on each item? And please be reasonable!
Remember SSG is soley supported by advertising dollars and nothing else! No sponsers and/or if you guys don't click on the ads, than no SSG! Steve works harder than you guys probably realize keeping this site going and pretty much does everything himself, except his great mod staff which he appreciates immensly! And he'd like to keep it as free as possible, that's why alternate Ideas like the now active auction section (http://auctions.sirstevesguide.com/), and a possible SSG store are better Ideas so the site can remain free!
So let(pm) him or myself know what you'd like to see or just want, and how much you'd be willing to spend on such items(keeping it reasonable), and we'll do our best to get it to you! Also as SS said to me over CIII, he's not looking to make a fortune off of you guys(although he's gotta make a living too) he wants to keep it as low as he can, however the more dollars that come into the site, the more the Site can expand, the more SS can do to make SSG even better!!! SSG has always been about 1)Star Wars, but 2) and more importantly, all of us here and our love of Star Wars, it's the guys AND Girls that come to the site and contribute in some fashion or another that makes SSG the best SW fan site on the net! I learned this over the course of CIII meeting the forumites that I did, and hope to meet more of you! So Let us know what we can do to make it even better! ThanX The 'Xir And MTFBWY...always! :classic:

On topic, I'd definitely buy a SSG shirt. Us nerds have to have something to be proud of.

Why now? It's all over. This SW thing will be so yesterday in a few days or so. ;) Besides I wouldn't walk around with a shirt that had Steve's name on it anyways, maybe SSG in some cool graphics, but Sir Steve on my back just doesn't look good. OK Steve time to change the sites name to something cool. How about Galactic Hunter, or how about Rebel Scum?:p

I thing we should keep the abbreviation motif intact and change the name to something like TFN. :p

Putting on the Caeser hat for a second...
I would still love a SSG shirt.
Has anyone (well, Steve) considered using a site that does 99% of the work for you, like cafepress.com (http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/makemoney)?
At CafePress, you can create and sell products with your designs - all with no upfront costs. Get a free online shop and promote your products on your website, blog or in our Marketplace. CafePress handles all product creation, credit card processing, shipping and customer service. From what I understand, this way seems pretty easy, without having to actually invest any money in this in case it doesn't work and only 4 people end up buying a shirt (or whatever).
I was thinking if Steve went this route, he could an image design contest or something.
EDIT: I almost forgot, our very own Vyn has had some experience with Cafepress. Perhaps he can throw in a word or two...
Now removing the Caesar hat...

I want a SirStevesGuide thong.
Why is it that some people call it a Caesar hat while others call it a Slicker hat ? Are we in competition ?
And speaking of hats, I'd like to buy a condom that reads SSG but expands to read SirStevesGuide.
I won't need the verson that further expands to read SirStevesGuide.com :(
but JimJam will. lol lol lol

Not sure I've ever heard the Slicker hat term., but it's probably like comparing Transformers to Gobots (No offense Slick).

Yeah. I think I've proved that that's a blatant on numerous occasions. I suppose my only hope is that my wedding ring will act as some sort of force field between me and some random chick.
Perhaps I'll keep league with Rocketboy more often so we can do the whole Wonder Twins thing: "Wonder Twins power activate! Form of married late twenty-something guy who avoids parties like the plague for fear of being 'the creepy old guy'".

I'm not sure a pay section would be adaquate, I'm new and I like being able to look in most places. Maybe a pay to post adverts for selling items?

Ok, so... what would you be willing to pay for? I've set up a SSG merchandise section (shirts, mugs, mouse pads, etc) but never turned it on. It's kind of weird for me... What would be your "wish" features if you could have anything? And I am not talking just for the forums... anything? Daily updated (or as needed) Price Guide? Trading system? No banner ads? Guaranteed server up-time during shows for "Premium" Users? Premium users could get larger images (if available)? What about a dedicated page for your own SW Collecting Blog?

I would buy some T-shirts, mugs and such. I dont use mousepads, but i would buy one to hang up at the desk or something.
Rocketboy

I'd mostly dig some merchandise, mostly the types of things you listed, especially if it helps to say "thank you" for the site.
I'm not big into collecting anymore (buying only what really grabs my attention) so and the banners don't really bother me so much (it has been a good way to some really cool stuff I haven't seen before) and price guides seem to be pretty useless since ebay. But our own personal collection page could be cool.

I, too, would be down with the "coffee cup & t-shirt" idea. I don't think a pay "section" per se would fly, since most of us are pretty desensitized to banners and such anyway.

I wouldnt pay for Slickers Mom.
We could have an SSG exclusive Slicker's Mom figure -- Hasbro just needs to blow up the head from the old monkey-faced Leia and pop it on a Muftak body.
Alternately, Steve could hire Slicker's Mom to visit people who don't pay "protection" fees. :whip:
