For all you fans of 80's animation, another long requested series finally makes it's way to DVD. TVShowsonDVD announced today that the first 33 episodes of the first season will be released on August 9th. With Volume 2 holding the other 32 from the first season later in the fall. With this and He-Man on the way, it looks like we'll all be getting what we've been asking for soon. :)
Thundercats - More '80s Classic Cartoons Arrive In August!

In a distant galaxy, the world of Thundera is in crisis. The planet's structure has become unstable and is near collapse. With their destruction imminent, Thundera's denizens - known as the Thundercats - escape in a spaceship and plot a course for a new home. While in transit, the Thundercats are attacked by evil mutants and their craft is irreparably damaged. Jaga, the eldest Thundercat, sacrifices himself in order to pilot the ship safely to its destination: Third Earth.

He-Man DVDs are coming in July, and fans of classic '80s cartoons could not be happier...unless you gave them a second classic '80s cartoon on DVD just a few weeks later! Warner Home Video is announcing the August 9th release of Thundercats - Season 1, Volume 1, carrying 33 episodes: an even half of the first season of the adventurous animated show.

You'll also find a cool extra on this set: "Feel the Magic, Hear the Roar: ThunderCats Fans Speak Out", an interview featurette in which Wil Wheaton (of Star Trek: The Next Generation) and other loyal fans give their memories and support to this animation classic. That supplement runs 7:04, and the running time of the episodes comes to 759 minutes.

Cost is $64.92 SRP. This is the first of two releases to complete the 65-episode season premiere, and you can expect Season 1, Volume 2 to be available later this Fall, to complete the first full season! Stay tuned for more information about that, and cover art for this release as well.

thats sick news. as broke as i am from buying toys and other dvds, i will still get them. i remember when they were replaying them on cartoon network a while ago. the 80's was the best, especially if you were a kid. thanks for the update.

Thanks for the info JJB. I'm a little unsure about buying this show. I enjoy watching the show when it makes an appearance on CN but could I sit through a few DVD's worth? It looks like this set is pretty light on the Extras which is too bad. Perhaps I'll get the Thundercat fever when I see this set in person.

I've got mixed feelings about the Thundercats. While the animation was pretty cool and the characters looked good, the show suffered from what I call "Voltron Syndrome". That is, the show always followed a formula (at least throughout the first season). Lion-O gets in trouble, uses the Eye, and calls the Thundercats; beat-down ensues.

I thought the best episodes were the ones where Lion-O had to best each Thundercat in his/her specialty in order to officially become LOTTC. No Eye of Thundera, and really interesting interaction between the characters.

As good of news as this is, I really wish they will recreate the show and have a new toy line for it. So long as Mattel doesn't get the license for it, it would be awesome. In any event, I will have to check the funds to see if I can nab this. I still have preorder Soprano's season 5 as well.

Doesn't Mattel make the new MOTU? That looks pretty good...

McFarlane toys would be pretty great though.

Well, uh, Mattel did make the new He-Man line, as well as the realistic Batman line. But something about case assortments of five He-Man or Batman repaints and one supporting character killed both lines off pretty quickly despite a great deal of fan interest. I think that's what megaprime's referring to.
