I've been thinking (and it hurts) anyway, In the trilogy when Luke is young and a very inexperienced Jedi, he has a blue saber, as he gets older and more experienced he gets a green saber. In Episode I, Qui-Gon The Master has a Green saber and Obi-Wan The Learner has a blue saber. In Episode II Obi-Wan the Master has the Blue saber and Anakin the reckless learner has a green saber. Is this a subtle way of showing Anakins quest for higher power and that he thinks he is ahead of his master?

I always thought the lightsaber's colour was up to it's creator, that it didn't really show how powerful the user was.

I use to think the samething Jek Porky but Episode I changed all that and now I think at the color of the saber has nothing to do with level of training or experience a Jedi has...

Anakin's saber is blue at the open of AOTC. This saber is taken from him when he is captured on Geonosis, and the green one was the property of an expired Jedi that Anakin retrieved off the arena floor. I don't think it matters what color a Jedi has........but Sith always have red sabers.

Jedi's tend to use Earth tone colors (green, blue, yellow, etc...) but Sith use RED, mythological RED is the color of/for evil...

I used to think that the saber color was showing the purity to the side of the Force that the builder had within. My theory was that Jedi built their sabers using the Force to help create the crystals, and that their attunement to the Force changed the crystal slightly for each user as they were creating the crystal - builders true to the light side had blue sabers like Obi-Wan, while builders who weren't entirely true to the light side and did things a little towards the dark side like Luke ROTJ and Qui-Gon had green sabers, and those who were consumed by the dark side created fiendish red sabers.

However, the prequels drove that out with all the crazy colors for the Jedi council, yellow, maroon, purple, so now I think it's just random and Lucas uses it as a storytelling device without giving a logical explanation.

The saber colors made much more sense in ANH-RotJ, but in AotC GL has to get more colorful because of all the extra Jedi's in one scene... I mean would you rather have a couple hundred Jedi's with just Green or Blue sabers or a much wider color septum with yellow, purple or teal...

The colour of a respective Jedi Knight's saber blade is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, simply because they do not span, it would seem, more than 3 colours: green, blue and purple. The venerability of a Jedi Master would be very difficult indeed to decipher if the only evidence you have to go on is the colour of his/her lightsaber. It is clearly not reflective of the martial arts where a coloured belt denotes a level of attainment and hence the time devoted to its study. Although it was mentioned by Lucas during a clip on the DVD that the braiding worn by a Padawan would feature coloured ribbons or markings running down its length as a marker of a learner's progress within the Jedi Order. It would seem, however, that the colour of a lightsaber blade is a matter of choice for the Jedi. If the colour held greater significance then surely you'd see all the colours in the spectrum.
As for the Sith electing to wield a red-bladed weapon, well that's simple: a) It is unique to their Order; b) red is the colour of blood, and the spilling of such tissue is what the Sith live and breathe for - Jedi kind of course;

'nough said! :)

Saber blade colours are more likely based upon the colours typically found in laser-light show laser projectors: Red, green, blue and yellow. Purple (or magenta) is possible but not common.
It's all to do with the crystals I suspect and the quality of those crystals and amount of refraction tangents per generated unit of light....

Actually I'm just making this up for fun. :) But I reckon those saber colours are based on earthly laser colours though. George has said many times that everything in star wars has at least some element of design we recognise, so that we accept the designs more readily and they don't stick out like a sore thumb. If the colours are based on lasers then there is the recognition factor and we will accept the colours more as 'laser swords' than if they were every hue under the rainbow. IMO :)

There cannot be any other explanation for their inclusion than their association with the physical sciences. After all, Star Wars is pseudo reality, so it is unimportant to label triviality with complexity. The wielding of a formidable weapon is always a mark of status and the colour of its blade, be it lightsaber, broadsword or a katana samurai, is TOTALLY insignificant.

For sheer visual delight, more colours would be nice though.:)

I to believe that the color was up to the Jedi. It seems to be a way to personnalize the lightsaber. A Jedi has to build thier own and if you make something, you will put your own ideas into.

I like Teal so anything to see a teal colored blade would be nice! :)

The multi colored blades you see on the toys were just done by hasbro. Lucas himself stated that blue, green, and red were the only colors he wanted to be used by the jedi. Samuel L. had to ask Lucas for a purple blade at his own request. Lucas said he had to think about it, and ended up letting him have it. Anyways, I really doubt we see any other colors than these four.:p

Actually, I remember Sammy had a quote on the force.net not too long ago, that said something to the extent of: "I wanted purple, but I guess blue will do." I believe the purple saber was for the cover of the fan club mag only. I think you are correct though......I don't expect we will see anything different.

I still think we'll see a wide variety of saber colors, staying close to the traditional greens and blues (like teal and hunter). That way Lucas could stay within the mythology that he created and yet offer the color septum for a massive on-screen Arena Battle...

The saber colors in ROTS really got screwed up.

Prior to that, a Sith could not be beaten with a blue blade. Inexperienced youngsters lost in battle with blue blades, only to beat the same Sith Lords when equipped with a green blade.

Not to mention the whole "blue vs blue" really mucked things up.

I would want a Yellow one like Bespin Luke.
