View Full Version : The Greatest Month Of The Year!!

Slicker
12-01-2004, 08:53 PM
Well it's December, the greatest month of the year. Not only is it my mom's birthday (Dec. 4), my brothers birthday (Dec. 17), and my birthday (Dec. 31) but in case you didn't know it's the very month with, you guessed it, Christmas. I absolutely love Christmas probably more than JBF loves Thanksgiving. I like the gifts but it's more than that. The decorations, the snow, the atmosphere, and best of all THE MUSIC. Nothing beats Christmas music. And not the new artists nothing beats music by Johnny Mathis, Bing Crosby, and Perry Como. I'm even one of those idiots that goes out the day after Thanksgiving just so that I can get in the spirit and it always works. If it could be Christmas year round I'd be in heaven.

I absolutely love Christmas probably more than JBF loves Thanksgiving.

Be careful what you say, Slicker . . . because I really love Thanksgiving. I think I might have the AIM chat transcripts where I went into some detail on the subject, too. :D

Indeed

But not to take anyway from your thread, I will add my feelings on Christmas. For me, Christmas is the big thing to send off the old year with. I love it for the gift giving and the vacation days from regular life. As for the atmosphere of the holiday, I was never big on it. I think Halloween takes the crown for the atmosphere it creates. Plus I love that sort of stuff, so we can see why I really favor Halloween. Thanksgiving I love for the food, and I love good food. Thanksgiving provides that, so I have to award it second place.

Now there is Christmas. I'm not too keen on Santas and snow and bad television specials like lame Rudolph and the like. I like the gifts and the shopping deals. I don't hate Christmas or anything. I still call it the third best time of the year. Good times all around with the holiday, and a good way to send off the year.

Christmas is a good holiday, but I'm with JBF that Thanksgiving and Halloween are much better:)Third greatest Holiday.

However, since this is a Christmas topic,I'll continue.I love the cold weather,so there a upside of December.I love putting up lights and decorations outdoors, even though half the time I'm in a rickety ladder with 30+ mph winds trying to knock me off the ladder :D Getting those breaks off school and just chilling out is the best as well, not to mention the marathon of "A Christmas Story" :D

Both my parents were born in December. Between their birthdays and Christmas it's an expensive month. :)

I too enjoy the Christmas season for all the reasons you stated Slicker. Don't forget the Christmas movies........well, just one Christmas movie, A Christmas Story! I see Slicker that you're sporting a Raphie avatar. :)

As for favorite month/holiday, Christmas is neck and neck with July 4th for me. For the same reasons that I love December I really like July. 4th of July songs, fireworks, parades, cookouts, cookout food, 16 hours of daylight. Goodtimes.

December sucks.
Cold. Snow. Cold. Snow.
And working in a department store will kill any love you have for Christmas.
People start getting meaner/ruder around November.
I've been sick of seeing Christmas since Halloween.
I've been hearing Chirstmas music since November 1, and I'm sick of that (and I used to love it).

There are only 5 good things about Christmas:
5. "Bad Santa"
4. "Elf"
3. "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation"
2. "A Christmas Story"
1. Christmas Day...it somehow makes up for November an December (well, until December 26).

How could I forget the Christmas movies? You've gotta love em all especially A Christmas Story and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

And don't forget kiddies "Bumble's Bounce".

Well, Slick, since we sorta grew up in the same house I would have to say that I share your sentiments. The only problem with having a birthday in December is that you don't get presents any other time of the year. The good part about having a birthday right before Christmas is that you get to hone your rip and throw unwrapping technique shortly before the big day, making you a more effeciant present opener. But Slicker, you forgot one of the most important things about Christmas: A REAL Christmas tree. Nothing beats the smell.

Slicker
12-04-2004, 08:32 PM
Well, today I went out and bought that holiest of holiday items, the Christmas tree. I paid alot more than I've ever paid in my life ($73) and I didn't get to freeze my arse off in the snow passing all of the good trees only to pick the worst one because your so cold and you just want to get in the car because I unfortunately had to go to a pre-cut lot.:dis::dis: No bother thought I'm about to decorate it and listen to some Christmas music and nothing could be better in life.:)

Yeah, December is hands down my favorite month of the year as well, for all the reasons that Slicker has mentioned. I like the spirit of the season, the rush of finding the perfect present, crowded malls, seeing loved ones, holiday music and movies, etc. etc. If I had to break down my 10 favorite things about Christmas, it would look like this:

10 - T.V. Specials like "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," "The Grinch . . ." and "Charlie Brown's Christmas Special."

9 - The Music - my favorites of many are traditionals like "Do You Hear What I Hear" "Sleigh Ride (Boston Pops version)" and nontraditional like "Happy X-Mas (War Is Over) (Lennon)" "Last Christmas (Wham)" and "Little St. Nick (The Beach Boys).

8 - Egg Nog and Christmas Cookies

7 - Decorations; not putting them up but enjoying them.

6 - Shopping

5- The weather. Where I live we have about a 55% chance of snow on Christmas.

4 - Seeing loved ones who visit around this time

3 - The movies such as "A Christmas Carol" "A Christmas Story" and "It's A Wonderful Life."

2 - December 24th, a day of family gathering and warmth.

1 - The Spirit of the Season and the true meaning of it.

You have summed up everything in your top 10 list very nicely LBC and I thank you.

Well, since everyone else in the country gets over Thanksgiving quickly so will I. I'll bring this back because December is still the best month of the year. Christmas is still there, (I'll def. be home), my birthday is still there (I doubt I'll be home for that), and we still have Christmas songs. If you don't like then just deal with it.

Christmas is only 1 month away!!!

I had a great Thanksgiving and love this holiday but I still enjoy the Christmas season and everything that comes along with it. Now is the time for us not to buy any figures or DVD's or anything else for ourselves but for others who we care about or those less fortunate. I think it would be cool if we all bought a figure and then gave it to Toys for Tots.....I had actually thought about giving my entire collection to them a couple of times....would bring more joy to those who have none.....Happy Holidays everyone!

I thought I posted in this thread last year, but oh well.

December is also my favorite month! My birthday is 12-1, so of course it's a good way to start the month. :D I love all the Christmas stuff (which should NOT start until Black Friday, at least) as well.

Yippee only a month to go!!!!!!!

Slick, in your round up of xmas music, you left out any mention of holiday classics from King Diamond, Spinal Tap, and AC/DC. ;)

Bah! Humbug.

Christmas has faded for me as my Number 1 holiday as kid, having been replaced by Halloween.

Still, I help family decorate (my mom's outdoor display grows exponentially each year) and enjoy the same sights and sounds as most of you.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Bil Murray's Scrooged. Along with A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation, Scrooged is part of my traditional trilogy of holiday films.

I quickly tire of Christmas carols but I'll probably spin my Bing Crosby, Beach Boys, Burl Ives, & Trans-Siberian Orchestra xmas discs at least once this month.

Speaking of music, one of the stations here in Colorado plays Christmas music nonstop from a few days before Thanksgiving right up until Christmas. If I were the DJ for that station I think I'd go utterly nuts after about a day. :dead: I mean I like the Christmas music but enough is enough!

I still can't fathom that Bing Crosby and David Bowie have a duet of "Little Drummer Boy." That would be like Donny Osmond and Ozzy making a redo of "O Little Town of Bethlehem."

Feliz Navidad amigos.

Most of the decorating is done. All that's left is to trim the tree (didn't have time tonite). What sucks is that we live an hour away from our closest family, so until Slicker and Rocketboy come over on the 23rd, no one except us will see it.

It's hard to be a student and enjoy the season, since finals are barely two weeks before Christmas.

What, am I the only one that does Christmas Eve dinner the same way I do Thanksgiving.

Sure Thanksgiving is great, but for my family, it's always just sorta been a warm up to the big Christmas dinner, sorta like the pre-game show. Our family always goes further on Christmas...more home made candy, cookies, pies, etc. all in addition to the big Christmas Turkey and Ham! We have pretty much everything else you would expect on Thanksgiving and then some!

Aside from that there is the gift giving, watching my daughter's eyes light up when she opens her presents.

For me, Christmas beats out Thanksgiving, besides, there are no annoying shoppers out on the streets the following day, trying to buy up sale items at 5 a.m. Just the "returners" and they usually don't get out of bed 'til 9-10 a.m. the day after Christmas.

Sure Halloween is still number 1 in my book, in terms of overall fun. My daughter is still talking about her Halloween coustume a month after Halloween. But for me Christmas is a close second.

As for the Christmas music, I don't like it soo much. Snow is great on Christmas day, but I wish it was gone the other 364 days out of the year. I guess that's part of why Christmas comes in second for me.

Day-um! Was that a national sale for all Wal-Marts or just a store wide error. Can't believe I missed it. :(

And yes, most local radio stations decided to go all Christmas, before Thanksgiving this year. Not bad, but I would have much preferred they gradually eased the rotation of Christmas music into their playlists instead of going all out.

Yeah, I agree it's pretty gross, but I have relatives who really like the Ham. Personally I rarely eat pork of any kind, and I do mean rarely. I used to eat bacon and sausage when I was younger, but now it really plays a number on me, heartburn and such. Besides, it just doesn't taste that good to me...tooo greasy.:Ogre:

If you think that's gross, check this out. My grandmother used to take the bone and boil it to get all the meat off and cook it up with beans, she would leave that junk cooking all day on low heat 6-8 hours straight, she just kept adding water the beans and ham remnants would stink up the whole house. It used to make me sick.:(

I sure do miss her, God rest her soul, she was a lousy cook but a great woman.

I sure do miss her, God rest her soul, she was a lousy cook but a great woman. Piffle, my dear fellow, but how else should one make pork and beans? Stick a nice big ham bone in a pot of water with beans and slow cook it all day. Whatever meat is left on the bone practically falls off, tender and juicy, and you can always add more chunks of ham. Bake a pan of cornbread to go with it and you have a nice warm meal for any cold, wintry day.

I think that the fun of Christmas shopping and the joy of the holiday in general has been sucked out of me being as I work retail and you have to deal with a few jerks who can set your whole day off in a bad way. I worked 82 hours the last week, and I have been to tired to get the decorations up from the basement. I do have it on my agenda for tomorrow, so I'm hoping this will lighten the mood for me. Also I don't exchange gifts anymore. I only give my son a few things, but otherwise my C.C are maxed so that may add to the depresssion because I used to loe buying stuff for my whole family. They are pretty much in the same boat.

I also haven't started on this years Christmas cards yet. I make my own, and when I started this many years ago, it was done to track my son as he grew, then just after he turned 5, his mother moved off to Florida with him, and I was unable to get pictures of my son to put into my Christmas card. I stopped for a year, and instead sent out store bought cards which I got many responses saying they wanted one of my home made cards, so I started back at it again. I hear ya BF! In high school I worked at a retail place that sucked some of the fun out of Christmas. While I no longer work in retail I do work for a company that (attempts) to be United in its Parceling Service. ;) The busy time is hear and its taken much of the 'steam' out of Christmas for me.

christmas in the south just wasn't the same last year... in NY, everyone decorates and stuff. down here, i don't remember any decorations aside from those in the malls.

so that's why we're moving back up! jan. 1st, we're back to NY. not long island, going mid- to upstate, either ulster county or greene county. depends on where we find jobs.

unfortunately, we're doing so much travelling we won't have a tree, or decorations in our apartment this year. kinda sucks. but we'll be up in NY for the big day, so it will be decorated there...

i think it's part of the fact that they don't get excited about ANYTHING down here... they blame it on the "southern heat" but to be honest, i didin't find it any hotter down here than up there - and not EVERY frickin' two-window shack up there is air conditioned. i think they have air conditioned bus stops down here.

I prefer to keep it simple. Some icicle lights across the front porch windows, and my Christmas tree, with a few Christmas knick knacks here and there. I have a string that hangs between my living room and dining room that I hang my Christmas cards from. I don't go for the big plastic stuff on the front lawn, but I do enjoy the 3-D lighted deer, or there is this year a big inflatable snowglobe which is pretty awesome, and it blows little styrofoam looking balls that make it look like a just shaken snowglobe. I have nothing to place on my front lawn though, as my house is between two business's and back off the road.

Is that what you kids call it these days? When I was your age we called that "doggy style."

I just finished watching it! That's my favorite CHRISTMAS special. :)

Did you watch the traditional version or the one in where Charlie goes all ape#%#^ on Lucy for pulling back the football one too many times?

I'm not sure if that's a serious question or not, LBC (that happens alot here :)), but if it indeed is, it was the traditional one.

How many and what kinds of Star Wars ornaments are on there? (Those electronic Hallmark ornaments are addicting)

I've only got 2 SW ornaments on it (Hallmark Slave Leia and Clone) as the rest of them are back home in Michigan and I just never brought 'em along.

I'd love to have a tree with JUST SW ornaments. That'd be friggin' sweet.

The red one up front on the left with the green bow.

I don't see the point in Christmas Trees. Why bother when you just have to take it down.

Here's a picture of my Christmas tree that I just snapped...

What insult did you say to it and
did you follow with "Oh Snap!" ? ? ?

very nice, and did the tree retort with a Slicker's Mom joke? I bet it did.

Our tree is lopsided and doesn't even smell like a Christmas tree. Next year we're going back to fake ones.

It finally snowed a lot yesterday and - wouldn't you know it? - all hell broke loose. We got stuck in our car for a little while so now we're forced to stay inside, even though we still need to buy some more presents and whatnot. My dad was coming home from work, and after several hours of driving, ended up staying in a hotel last night and probably tonight, and we have no idea when he'll get home. The hotel isn't that far from here but the roads are closed and/or too bad. All the flights here have been cancelled, so we don't know when my sister from NY will get here.

Merry f***in' Christmas . . .

How do you get a Christmas tree that doesn't smell like a Christmas tree?

Maybe it's really a festivus pole.

If it's the pole from the strip club your mom works for, I don't want to smell it.

Yeah, he ended up coming home a few hours after I posted that, actually. He had to walk three miles in the snow to get back to his car (some people had given him a ride to the hotel earlier). Also, my sister got on a standby flight yesterday, so it all worked out just fine. :)

By purchasing a crappy one. It kind of smells when you get up close to it, but it's not nearly as strong odor-wise as our others have been.
