View Full Version : I just realized, General Greivous is basically Vader! (no spoilers please)

Pardon me if this has been discussed here before, I'm actually spoiler-free and haven't been reading this section myself. (Also, if you could minimize spoilers on this thread, that'd be great.)
Earlier today I realized that the concept of General Greivous, that of a Jedi-killing, lightsaber-wielding cyborg, is basically the same concept as Darth Vader. I don't know much about the guy except the cartoons and the basic buzz, but he does read a bit like a Vader rip-off to me - granted, not a "Death Star II" level of rip-off, more like an "Outlanders Club" level. So anyway, am I slow to the party, or way off base, or actually on to something?

Han: "I think you hit it pretty close to the mark, kid." (Paraphrased, of course)
I wouldn't say he's a massive rip off of Vader, but he does fit a purpose to the overall story that I don't want to go too much into. I think he's in the movie to more or less establish the tech of taking what ammounts to a corpse and having it used as the basis of a cyborg type of being. Plus to also give Obi-Wan something to occupy him while Anakin's arc is playing out. I think his design and story are pretty unique, and can't wait to see him on the big screen. He's a million times more intresting than that wanker Durge from Clone Wars, that's for sure. :)

That's like the 3rd time we've agreed on something in the last 2 days, I'm scared!
...I wouldn't say he's a massive rip off of Vader...
Yeah, I'm not saying he's a total rip (the thread title is a bit misleading), that's why I made the "DS 2"/"Outlanders Club" reference.
I don't think I dig his design, but it's way better than the BTS photo on the official site.

Hey, we don't always agree but we have the same general ideas in most respects. And at least when we don't agree, you respect my opinion, and I respect yours. So nothing to be scared about. Lucas is right, there is a diverse fanbase and they all have different ideas. What pleases one, will tick off another. :)

No, no, no, no! Vader is a fallen Jedi. Grievous is a Trandoshan former fast food employee from Dantooine who was severely crippled in a speeder accident. His longtime love, Lurlene, was killed in this accident, and Grievous became a holonet scam artist so that he could earn the money to purchase a cybernetic body with which to defeat the Jedi Knights, as Kit Fisto was directing traffic that day and Grievous mistook his mighty grin for a signal to go through a red light.
Oh, sorry, you said no spoilers! D'oh!

Grevious is part of a reoccurring theme in the movies; men who act like machines, machines that act like men, men mass-produced like machines, men that are part machine, machines that are part man, etc.
