What are the best types of paints to use when custominzing basic 4" figures?
I use testors acrylic paint. Testors is a good brand but you can use any brand of paint. Acrylic paint easily washed off if you make a mistake. If you use enamel it will dry sticky and will leave streaks. You might want to look at ffurg. It a great source on custom figure painting.

What kind of customizing were you planning to do? Just a simple repaint or some major boiling and poping?

Just a simple repaint. I took a Kit Fisto & removed the head & hands. I replaced the hands with Saga Qui-Gon & the head of POTF2 Weequay. I need(ed) to paint the hands.
Also wanted a yellow clone commander.

Weequay style Jedi (with Clone Wars Kit Fisto in the back). The hands look fine in person but the flash made them look too light. Plus I don't know what's up with my camera & the blurry pics today!
