Funny we already when through this pros and cons of political/religious topics in the General discussion bit, and what should and shouldn't be allowed on a star wars site back in nov and dec.

It doesn't seem like the rest of us have issues with the new "rule" or rules. Heck even Tycho is playing by the new rules...you should follow his lead.

TOR, if you want to break forum rules, go ahead - on someone else's site. I don't particularly like society's rule about "swear words" but it's not my place to break Steve's forum rule about it, so my options are I can either accept it or leave. If the rules have to be enforced in a fair and equal manner, what makes this thread more important than any other political thread that it should get special treatment? I saw nothing to suggest it should. That thread was ridiculously thinly-veiled, technically I could have deleted it instead of just closing it, but I chose to leave it there so the text wouldn't get lost. You who posted in it got your point across and bent the rules, it's not like anybody who posted there didn't know what the rule was either so how should I have dealt with that - by suspending everybody who participated? By making the last post a chastizing warning to all who read it? I acted in a manner I felt was most appropriate, if you would prefer something else I could send those involved a warning which puts them one step towards suspension but I'd rather the action taken be all that's required.

You know exactly why this thread was closed, and I'm sure you knew it was probable it would have been closed for that reason when you posted it.

Actually, being that I created the post with the intent of showing a humorous little comparison between the clone wars and the clone of the attack, I did not expect it to be banned.

It was never meant to spark some serious discussion of the current war in Iraq using some thinly veiled "star wars" cover. it was meant as a joke, which seems to be what everyone but the mods saw it as. Fair enough, you've got the power.

I think it is a rather silly rule to impose, banning discusion of the war, and serves no purpose. Someone else in history did that too - also burned a few books aswell - but as JT correctly says, if you don't like the rule, post those topics on another site.

I also see the parallels between the new trilogy and the global politics.

We are guests here and must act as such, but TOR, I agree completely with ya ;)

I didn't realize there was also a ban on comedy ;) There isn't a ban on comedy, though if that's what that thread was, then Ep 2 or Other would have been appropriate places for it since you weren't actually looking for a serious discussion - I saw no ground rules nor intention posted about it being strictly comedy and felt it was a political-based thread. However, even if I misinterpretted your original intention, the thread was closed because it wasn't just me who thought it was a political discussion and it seemed like it was gonna go further into that wilderness pretty fast. It's not like I deleted the thread, your comedy is still there. Anybody can read it at any time they want.


jeddah, you can discuss the war here, but when it gets into this political bickering we've been suffering through in these forums lately, that's where the line is drawn. Also, that implication comparing my mod job to that of a Nazi is not appreciated and hurts.

i don't think it's fair to compair sir steve to hitler. private individuals banning certain discussions on their property in no way compairs to the state limiting free speech. if the federal government starts banning political discussions, then we've got a problem, but this is essentially steve's cyber house. his house, his rules.:)

Here's the problem: This forum is significantly leftist...and their are only a certain few that start political threads in the first place. Generally, it's a thread that belittles the current administration, the gov't as a whole, or the country itself. Regardless of what these authors think about their style, good debaters don't begin their arguments (threads) with little-girl-whining and attacks. They present a case using logic and fact. Not with, "Hey, that Dubya's an idiot, teeheehee." "Hey, the USA's illegally invading Iraq, boohoohoo". That's not how it works. When you do that, you invite poor-debating rednecks like me into your conversation who will tell you exactly what I think about you and your opinions, much to the dismay of the other members and higher-ups. Then, I get banned, and the writings of the leftys get immortalized. So, you tell me, is it really worth it? :crazed:

As for your "right wing" beliefs, get over yourself - you are the only "right wing" believer on these forums who was suspended for anything to do with these political threads - maybe, just maybe, it has nothing to do with my beliefs or DA's beliefs or any mod's beliefs but instead with your actions. If you hadn't noticed, left-wingers feel they're the minority on the forums, right-wingers feel they're the minority on the forums, Christians feel they're the minority on the forums, agnostics feel they're the minority on the forums, everybody who has a religious or political opinion on the forums seems to feel they are the underdog and fights tooth and nail because they're alone in their battle for the opinion of the cause in question.

Update - after giving it some more thought, I've reopened the thread and moved it to OTHER. That doesn't mean it's ok to make thinly-veild political arguments concerning current events, just that if the intent of the thread is upheld then it could fall within the scope of the new rule's stated exception.

Star Wars Politics is one thing but according to the mods, it was beyond that. I'd be careful with it... politics is always a touchy subject. I really can't stand my own rule but when people start going at one another, we had no choice.... :(
