Since I lived every second of the 80s and am a collector of Video Games and other cool things of the period I set out to make THE 80s CD collection which ended up as 16 volumes. My only rule was to pick the best or coolest song from each group that had tons of hits. Example - 1 Duran Duran, Prince, ZZ Top, etc. Until I did a Big 80s CD - just 2nd big hits from said bands. I included songs from most of the genres if they fit the bill. Volume 9 was the original end - to begin and end with Devo was the plan...but I decided to keep going as I thought of other things.

This doesn't mean I like EVERY song on the list - but I couldn't just leave artists out I don't like as long as they made an impact they are there.

What exactly do you mean by "lost 80s"?

JEDIpartner

You forgot "Cars" by Gary Numan!

"Bette Davis Eyes" was 1980 or 1981, not 1984, though...

I love these lists... and I didn't realise you were such an afficionado on one of my fave groups of all time- BANANARAMA! Suggested remixes of their songs "...Rumour (Horoscope Mix)" and "Cruel Summer (Swing Beat Mix)" from 1989. I'm impressed! :D

They most certainly were not! Take that back or I'll slap your butt again....

I can't read those lists all that way down, it's too painful. It's like my life flashing before my eyes and I can't get Nik Kershaw out of my - damn - head - now!!!!!!!!! :crazed: "Wouldn't it be good to be in your shoes, even if it was for just one day....."

Oh please! Don't even try to tell me that those two singers did not look alike. Of Course the one in Big Country was chubbier in the face, but that was because it was his second band after Ah-Ha. To much booze and partying will do that to ya.:p

Morten Harket looks nothing like Stuart Adamson from Big Country. He was even really rough looking way back with squinty little piggy eyes. Morten Harket was a pin up. Anyway Stuart Adamson from big Country died a few weeks back which was sad. Morten Harket has continued with his 'career' and had a new album and single out recently. He appeared on british TV and denounced his AHA career. Loser! He should remember that the sun always shines on TV......

And I may just slap your butt anyway for the hell of it cuz I know you love it really:p

BBC News Online profiles rock singer and guitarist Stuart Adamson who has been found dead in Hawaii at the age of 43.
Stuart Adamson fronted one of the most successful bands of the 1980s.

Born in Manchester, he grew up in Crossgates, near Dunfermline, in Fife.

With singer Richard Jobson - now a journalist and television presenter - he formed the new wave group the Skids in the 1970s.

It was with the Skids that Adamson first tasted success, with the singles Into the Valley, Masquerade, Charade and Working for the Yankee Dollar.

After the Skids split, Adamson founded Big Country with fellow guitarist Bruce Watson in 1981.

The band were noted for their raw, passionate sound - Adamson's guitar had an insistent quality not unlike that of bagpipes.

He added an instantly recognisable and distinctively Caledonian twist to Big Country's traditional rock sound.

Big Country had a string of hits, including Fields of Fire, Chance, In a Big Country and East of Eden.

Their debut album, 1983's The Crossing, established the Scottish group in the US.

Their subsequent four albums, Steeltown (1984), The Seer (1985), Peace In Our Time (1986) and No Place Like Home (1988) went gold on release and took the bands total record sales to more than10 million.

Big Country played at one of the signature musical events of the 1980s -the Live Aid concert at Wembley, in 1985.

They continued recording and touring well into the 1990s, supporting Bob Dylan and veterans of Led Zeppelin Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.

In 1998, the band opened for the Rolling Stones at 18 European dates.

In May 1999, Big Country headlined the Scotland for Kosovo concert in Glasgow, joined by Eddi Reader, Teenage Fanclub, Gun, Simple Minds and Midge Ure.

The event was deemed a success, and they went on to play in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo, as part of a multinational all-star bill brought together by actress Vanessa Redgrave.

Big Country split last year, and Adamson went on to form another group, the Raphaels.

He had lived in Nashville for the past five years, and was married.

He had fought a long battle with alcoholism, and was found dead after going missing for the second time in two years.

I'm sorry to hear about Big Country.

That is one heck of a list. I didn't see these on your list:

Davie Bowie - China Girl
Go-Gos - Our Lips are sealed
Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone from Top Gun
The Firm - Radioactive
Hungry Eyes from Dirty Dancing
Men at Work - Who Can it Be Now?, Dr. Heckle and Mr. Jive, and Overkill

Was Bobby McFerrin Don't Worry, Be Happy in the 80s or was it 90-91?

Only 1 song each from Van Halen and Def Leppard?!?!? Pyromania and 1984 were good albums. However, if you are just looking for 1 song to represent the bands, those are good choices.

You could almost count the entire Footloose, Dirty Dancing, and Top Gun soundtracks. Not that they were good, but most of those songs had some airplay.

You only had 1 Fixx song. They had plenty other hits: Saved By Zero, Red Skies

“What exactly do you mean by "lost 80s"?”

I had originally had it all mapped down to the 1st 9 CDs. Lost 80s was my way of saying those songs were good, but not chart toppers and alas somewhat forgetten.

JEDIpartnr
“You forgot "Cars" by Gary Numan!”

I confess that is one of my all time most hated songs and just….couldn’t…add…it. Also "Shock the Monkey" - and that video doesn't help AT ALL!

Bette Davis Eyes was 1981.

Jonna
“Big Country and Ah-Ha were actually the same band”

Big Country was a great band – A-ha a 1 hit wonder.

Upstairs at Erics?

You’ll find most of the songs you listed are on my list.
David Bowie with Mick jagger - dancing in the streets
Kim Wilde - Kids In America
The Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now
Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue
The Steve Miller Band – Abracadabra
Etc.

Power Station - Bang A Gong
Since that is a T-Rex Cover, I went w/an original tune instead.

Rogue II
I have 3 Bowie songs already – Cat People wasn’t a best of though – just something I needed an excuse to have on CD ;-)

Don't Worry, Be Happy
Think that was 1989, but another I can’t take

Breakfast Club soundtrack is almost completely represented.

I intentionally left out heavy metal (Judas Priest type) and glam as it wasn’t what represented the 80s mainstream music – more it’s own sub genre.

I really loved her voice... it was rich and soulful. Beautiful stuff... unfortunately, they used so much for the inside that the outside was sacrificed!

No "Pride and Joy" by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble?

Was Devo's version of "Head Like a Hole" from 1989? IIRC, that's the year that NIN's Pretty Hate Machine came out, so that would be one heck of a fast turnaround for a cover. :) The only place I've ever seen Devo's take on this is on the Supercop soundtrack, though, so I could be mistaken.

Does anyone remember "Supersonic" by J.J. Fad? "Hawaiian Sophie" by Jaz? "I'd Rather Jack" by The Reynolds Girls? These songs totally cracked me up!
